Warning: Minor plot details but no actual spoilers.
There are no words to really describe this book, but the closest I can get is saying that it is my favorite book (tied for first).
Anne of Green Gables follows the coming-of-age story of Anne Shirley, an orphan who was adopted by the Cuthberts, brother and sister Mathew and Marilla, in Prince Edward Island, Canada. We see Anne go through marvellous adventures as she grows up and matures in her new home of Avonlea.
Many of her adventures are iconic moments that may sound familiar even to those who have never held the book: from kitchen mishaps to tea time gone wrong. I adored how Anne's character changed throughout the story. She really learned from her mistakes and they made her the girl she is at the end of the book: one who is ready to live through seven other books worth of life. The ending also sets up a beautiful budding romance that might be one of the greatest "one true parings" of all time.
As I read, I tried to explain to people what the reading experience was like and I was only able to use the adjective "delightful." This book is delightful in every way: the main cast of characters is lovely, the adventures are devine, and the writing is superb. Lucy M. Montgomery writes so beautifully. It is wonderful to find a classic that has the same style as any other classic, but is very easy to understand. It's that kind of writing that just makes you feel very cozy and happy, as well as smart, because you understand what's going on in such a beautifully written story. If you have attempted in the past to read this book but got stuck on the writing in the first couple of pages, I recommend you pick it back up again and retry. Any book with an opening line the size of a paragraph that takes up half of the first page may seem intimidating, but this one is worth it, so do yourself a favor and persist.
Anne of Green Gables is just all around beautiful and should be read by everyone at any age. I guess another term that could be used to describe it is "timeless classic."
