The Twilight Saga Mega Review Spectacular
Welcome to the Twilight Saga Mega Review Spectacular!
Some housekeeping items to get out of the way first: Today is a day in February 2022, I am the target audience for this series, and I love it with all of my heart. Therefore, if you look on my Goodreads, you will see that I rated them all 5 stars (except one that I don't really think counts). They were all 5 star reading experiences but in this review, I will be rating them other numbers of stars. So, assuming that they are all 5 stars, this is basically my ranking. I am aware that they are no masterpieces or brilliant, and that they are actually very cringy and sometimes bad, but I love this series either way.
Lastly before we begin the review: I watched the movies first. I used to make fun of Twilight until I listened to an episode of my favorite podcast, Bacon and Eggs: A Movie Lover's Podcast, and expected them to make fun of it but they actually liked it. I decided then to watch the movies, but swore to not read the books. One obssessive weekend later, I was at Barnes and Noble purchasing the first book and I have never looked back.
These reviews will include spoilers of both the books and movies (and also for Tuck Everlasting)! I will not go into depth of the movies, there will be another article about movie-book adaptations, so stay tuned for that!
Also, there are no cover reviews because they are all terrible. I just like the binding and how they all go together.
Now, without further ado, let's get reviewing The Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer:
- Twilight
I was warned ahead of time that this book reads like fan fiction. And yes it does. I was warned that the writing is cheezy and most of the verbs are "to be". And yes it is, and yes they are. I was warned that Bella is the most annoying main character in the history of protagonists. And yes she is. None of those details made me hate the book one bit.
All of these books, but especially this one, are so readable. It is so easy to read and not put down and it is such a quick read.
I love that there is basically no plot until the end and you are just watching Bella and Edward fall in love. I love Bella's friends and how she develops those relationships. I love that the only bit with any action is almost nonexistent. I love the Cullens so much. I have always been really against vampires. I've never liked them, I've always thought the stories are stupid, and I've always thought they made stupid Halloween costumes. I love the Cullens. I really love the vampire lore in Twilight and I loved finding out more throughout the books.
I will say, one thing that is weird is how obssessed with Edward Bella is. It's just a little much (until you read Midnight Sun, then it's okay).
Final thoughts: It's just absolutely perfect and I love it so much.
Villain review: The villains in all of these books are terrible, they are just not interesting and not well written, but I'm not coming for the villains. James is pretty bad.
In one sentence: Why is everyone in love with Bella?
In one sentence: Bella, where the hell you been, loca!
2. New Moon
New Moon pleasantly surprised me. Although I don't think it is the worst movie in the series, it is at the bottom of my ranking and I completely understand why people say it is the worst. However, the book is one thousand times better.
I really love the way Bella and Jacob's relationship develops. It's never weird like in the movie and we understand much better how Bella is feeling about him. I absolutely loved the Romeo and Juliet comparison throughout. It was a great analogy and it was the perfect way to explain Bella's feelings toward Jacob and Edward. If anything, I wish there was more of it in the book.
As far as story, it is on the weaker side. I am 100% team Edward, so I don't particularly like how Jacob-centric this book is. I love Jacob as a character and as Bella's best friend, but not as a love interest and I especially don't like him when he gets really intense.
Final thoughts: This is the most underrated book in the series but it is such a quick read.
Villain review: The voultori, I guess? I like them as characters, I think Aro is hilarious (and Michael Sheen was perfect playing him) but if they are the villains, true to Twilight style, they are really bad because they barely do anything. It's almost like in this one, the vilains are each of the characters, causing harm to each other.
3. Eclipse
I know it's an unpopular opinion, but Eclipse is my least favorite book in the series. I was very surprised that it was because it's my favorite movie, so I expected to love the book.
I had a bit of a hard time getting into this one. It was just harder for me to pick it up and I kept delaying my reading time because I was annoyed at it.
I think my problem with it is that there is just so much Jacob. Jacob being annoying, Bella thinking about Jacob, Bella not understanding how she feels about Jacob. Yet, it is supposed to feel like this big dilemma between Jacob and Edward, but it doesn't, right until she kisses Jacob. I just didn't feel like she was in denial about her feelings, and then suddenly she is confessing that she was in love with Jacob. It just felt so out of nowhere and random.
I also think that compared to the other books, this one had a lot more plot when I just wanted cute and dramatic romance. I just wasn't as interested in those parts.
Final thoughts: I obviously still love it. My favorite scene is hands down the conversation between Jacob and Edward in the tent. I love that relationship developing and it's just peak team Edward/team Jacob tension, and I'm living for it.
Villain review: I guess Victoria in this one is the best villain in the series, but that just goes to show just how bad the villains are. I just don't care about Victoria, but I like that she has a motive and that we know the backstory to that motive.
In one sentence: I hate Jacob for the entierty of this book.
In one sentence: Bella shouldn't have gotten to name her baby because Renesmee and Edward Jacob are both terrible names.
4. Breaking Dawn
Breaking Dawn is definitely my favorite book in the series. I loved every second of it. I love the honeymoon; I love that Jacob does the narration while Bella is pregnant to keep it more of a mystery; I love discovering Bella's power with her; I love the visiting vampiers; I just love everything. I also love that nobody from the main cast of characters die because it's just so perfectly on brand for Twilight to have all the characters alive. I love how ridiculous that last "fight" with the Voltori is and how there actually is no fight. It's all just so cringy and ridiculous and I love it all.
I really loved Renesmee and how she is a whole character, not just the kid who is also in it. And yes, I am also uncomfortable with the whole imprinting situation, but I think the books do a much better job with it than the movies. Plus, after a whole section of Jacob narrating, I couln't help but like Jacob again. And I love his friendship with Bella.
Final thoughts: This book is just such a good time and I was really satisfied with it as the series finale. I will say that, maybe it's because I watched the movies first, but it feels like there are wo different stories. But I understand keeping it as only one book because there is absolutely no real plot until the second half.
Villain review: Irina is such a stupid villain. She is barely in it and I personally didn't care about the Denali clan, so I did not care about Irina in the slightest. I guess I liked how she had a motive, and that motive was intertwined with the rest of the series.
3.5 Short Second Life of Bree Tanner
I don't know what to say about this one except that I hate it and it is a pointless read.
Here is who I think might like it: people who live and breathe Twilight, people who's favorite part of the series is the vampire lore, people who love the army of vampires in Eclipse, people who are actually curious about who Bree is, people who only read short books, people who only read Stephenie Meyer, and people who have not read much good literature. And again, I want to remind you that this is a hard might like the book, not will.
It is just so pointless. I did not care about the characters at all, I was not invested by the romance, and I didn't really care about what those vampires were up to during Eclipse.
Final thoughts: I am the first person to tell people to read Twilight, but even I would tell people to steer clear of this one.
Villain review: There are a few different ones, depending how you look at it. The only one who is really in it is Riley, who is so bland I was glad he was barely in Eclipse.
In one sentence: If you thought Bella was an annoying narrator, don't bother with this one.
In one sentence: I just love "boy-falls-first" romance books, so you bet I loved this one.
1 (too, I guess). Midnight Sun
I do not understand why people don't like this book. I loved it so much I liked it better than Twilight. And I know it is the exact same story, but I loved seeing Edward's perspective. I think part of the problem with liking this book as well as liking Bella and Edward's relationship in the whole series is that people don't see Edward as a regular 17-year-old. They think because he is "perfect," "handsome," and alive for 100 years, he isn't still a teenager, but he is. This is how I describe it: I think of Twilight as Tuck Everlasting but with vampires, because that is basically what it is. So if we can accept that Jesse Tuck is seventeen, why is it that just because Edward is good looking, he isn't also seventeen. I actually think the situation with Jesse is worse because Winnie is only eleven, but that is a discussion for another time.
All that to say that my favorite part of Midnight Sun was getting to see Edward as a teenager falling in love with another teenager, not a teenage girl falling in love with a mysterious vampire.
I also liked seeing how his decisions, specifically in New Moon, made more sense. And I loved seeing more of the Cullens.
Final thoughts: Something I think would be interesting is read this and Twilight intertwined since the chapters line up. It would be very interesting to see side by side how each one falls for the other.
Vilain review: Once again, James is a bad villain.
My Official Final Ranking

- Midnight Sun
